Opposition parties slam Orbán for Brussels remarks

Budapest (MTI) – The opposition Socialist, Jobbik, and Democratic Coalition parties have criticised Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his remarks made in a plenary debate of the European Parliament on Wednesday.

In a statement, Jobbik referred to Orbán’s speech in the EP as “theatre: a mixture of double talk, eyewash, and irresponsible politics”. Though Orbán advocated a constructive dialogue in Brussels, at home he will reject any such dialogue through his “bolshevik style, arrogant government”, Jobbik said in their statement. Orbán has created another “utterly unnecessary conflict”, while he was silent on “one of the most burning issues: ways to reduce the wage gap between Hungary and the EU”, the statement said.

In a statement, the Socialist Party insisted that Orbán had “got himself in a shameful spiral of lies”. Authors of the Socialist statement suggested that Orbán had lost support in the EU, with even MEPs of the European People’s Party “sharply criticising” Hungary’s recent higher education law or a current bill on the transparency of civil groups.

Péter Niedermüller, MEP of the Democratic Coalition, said that rather than “attacking Hungary” the European Commission rejected the policies of the Hungarian government. He suggested that the conflict between the government and Brussels could continue and it would impact the country.
