US may send ambassador to Hungary before year-end, says Goodfriend

Budapest, October 28 (MTI) – Andre Goodfriend, charge d’affaires of the US embassy in Budapest trusts that his country’s next ambassador to Hungary could arrive at their post before the end of 2014.

In an interview published in Tuesday’s Magyar Hirlap, the diplomat said that the US Senate was currently dealing with over 50 ambassadorial apointments. Delays in the procedure have nothing to do with Hungary, he added.

President Barack Obama nominated Colleen Bradley Bell, a Los Angeles-based TV producer, to serve as next US Ambassador to Hungary in early November, 2013.

Answering a question about his attending an anti-government demonstration in Budapest on Sunday, Goodfriend said that he had been present as an observer rather than as an active participant. He added that he had learnt about violent developments towards the end of the demonstration from the press, and condemned the vandalism.
