Bakelit Multi Art Center – An innovative spaces for contemporary dance
Bakelit Multi Art Center is one of the most innovative spaces for contemporary dance and theater in Budapest. Beside that, it’s based in Pest’s industrial area, where we have a lot of space in an old fabric hall to go creative.
With an exciting, changing program, the cultural center offers a place of free development for artists and new experiences for the visitors.
In addition to Hungarian pieces, international artists are also frequent guests.
As part of various EU programs, Bakelit cooperates with a number of European institutions, bringing the latest trends in contemporary dance and theater, as well as video and lighting installations to Budapest.
In the spring season the following pieces are to be seen:

Like a chant or the omen of a silence, the line of a quiet light arises in this movement from hands, from faces and arms that are the liturgy of lifted flight of a celebration: the world is now summarized in this space, in this sphere where bodies are the intimate praying of air, the quiet closing of breathing in which life stops and another one reborn, higher, freer and purer.
The Spanish company OtraDanza exists as a ‘shared peephole’, intended to show their enthusiasm for the body as a primary alphabet in creation, their eagerness for transmitting ideas and concepts through an ethereal and volatile outline with dance as the core.

The artists will visit various markets and restaurants, interview farmers, families and youngsters, travel to countryside, and obviously eat a lot, while making a physical dance show out if their fresh experiences. Their residency ends up with a work in progress presentation in Bakelit Multi Art Center on the 30th of May.

A comparison of the explosion of a star with the social explosion. Four Greek dancers-acrobats manage a surface that does not have a stable equilibrium. A collage of political speeches in a live soundscape is been gradually created where the concepts of oscillation, landing, lifting, personal action appear. An interactive combination and interrelation with the persons and the items arise during the process.
Gruppo e-Motion: Garbage Girls (IT)
Bakelit Multi Art Center
November 2017
For more information click here.
Garbage Girls is a poetic journey in the trash, between the immanent and transcendent: people who have to live “in desolation, are witnesses of the cruelty of life and its thousands of mysteries”. The performance is the poetic story of women who “move” themselves as if the road was the “theater of life”, composed of scenes and sounds that reproduce truth through falsity, reality through dreams, and crudeness through poetry.
Aho & Lundén Company: Ni contigo ni sin ti (FI)

Ni contigo ni sin ti by the Finnish Aho & Lundén Company tells the story of two different women. The dancers seek themselves and one another, as well as their own personality and connection to the world. While the predominant style is flamenco, elements of contemporary dance, for example, are also present. The language of movement and different music styles lead from one ambience to another.
Maria Naidu: The Life and Times of Ms. Karen Henderson (SE)
Bakelit Multi Art Center
December 2017

A vibrant firework packed with large doses of ironic humor, ambiguity and
quite a bit of dance. It is a multifaceted, 50 minute solo show that ponders questions of cultural identity, ethnic belonging as well as some curiously held stereotypical notions of dance as a profession.
Maria Naidu from Sweden makes the art of dance available and accessible to a wide audience. Her main tool is movement and her choreography is characterized by textural diversity and theatrical details.
