Tokaj wines to win in Bordeaux
Tokaj wines won the most medals among Hungarian wines at the Challenge International du Vin wine competition held for the 41st time in Bordeaux, according to turizmus.com.
From 38 countries 4376 wines were competing at the most significant international competition, this year as always the most samples were sent by French growers. 134 wines of 49 Hungarian wine-cellars were judged during the competition, which means Hungary sent the fifth most wine samples to the Challenge. The results of the competition held between 21-22 April in Palais de Congrés, Bordeaux were shared on the Challenge’s website on Friday; accordingly, the Hungarian wines were acknowledged with 17 gold, 16 silver and 5 bronze medals.
The Tokaj wines got the most, six gold medals, while 3-3 of the wine-growing regions of Badacsony and Eger, 2 of Balatonfüred-Csopak, and 1 wine of each Szekszárd, Mátra and Villány were awarded.
Among the six awarded Tokaj wines four were aszú: two from Grand Tokaj Zrt., one from Harsányi Wine-Cellar of 2013 and one from Pajzos Zrt. of 2006. In addition, the sweet white wine Katinka of 2015 from Patricius Winery and the szamorodni of 2013 from Szent Tamás Kft. won gold medals.
Further gold medal winners were the late harvest pinot gris and welschriesling of 2015 and Irsai Olivér of 2016 from Varga Pincészet Kft. of the Badacsony wine-growing region, the red wine Jumurdzsák of 2013, the cabernet sauvignon-blaufränkisch selection from Egri Korona Borház Kft. and the Egri Syrah of 2011 from X-Vin Kft. of the Eger wine-growing region. Two white wines of 2015 were awarded from the Badacsony-Csopak wine-growing region: the Figula 7 hektár of Figula Cellar and the Hangulat of Söptei Winery.
The Muscat Ottonel of 2016 of Borpalota Kft. from the Mátra wine-growing region, the Rosé Cuvée of 2016 of Lajvér Borház Kft. from the Szekszárd wine-growing region and the Villányi Csanád Cuvée of 2012 of Koch Winery from the Villány region became gold medalists as well.
Most of the silver medals were won by Tokaj wines as well, though the Irsai Olivér of 2016 of Nyakas Pincészet Zrt. from Etyek-Buda and one sweet and one medium sweet champagne of Törley Pezsgőpincészet Kft. can be found on the list of silver medalists. Next to the results the prices of the competing wines are also indicated; most of the Hungarian wines, 13 are between 5 and 12 EUR, three of the gold medalists and two of the silver ones are below 5 EUR.
As usually, the most, 697 medals were won by French wines, Spanish samples were acknowledged by 189, while Potugese ones by 149 medals. This year’s Challenge’s special guest was Morocco, which – after South-Africa – is the second largest wine-exporter of Africa; a red wine of 2015 and a rosé of 2016 from Morocco won special prizes in the competition.
