Hungary’s population down by 134,000 in 5 years

Hungary’s population decreased by 134,000 between 2011, the year of the last regular census, and October 2016, the Central Statistical Office reported on Wednesday.

In October last year, the country had 9,803,837 residents, KSH head Gabriella Vukovich told a press conference, presenting the results of the latest micro census taken midway between two censuses.

At the time of last year’s survey, 15 percent of the population were children, 67 percent were of active age, and 19 percent 65 or older.

Budapest was found the most densely populated city, with 3,360 people living per square kilometre. Residents across the country live in two- or three-room apartments, of an average size of 84 square metres, according to the report.

Fully 21 percent live in Budapest and 52 percent in other cities. Altogether 28 percent live in communities.

The survey was conducted with 10 percent of the total population living in 440,000 households.
