Justice minister evaluates past half year, outlines 2015 tasks

Budapest (MTI) – Major reforms affecting Hungarian law have been completed by adopting a new constitution and the state’s legislative, executive and judicial powers have now been clearly established, the justice minister told MTI in an end-of-year interview in which he also outlined tasks for 2015.

Laszlo Trocsanyi, who took over the post in June, revisited his ministry’s work over the past half year, mentioning legislation on the phasing out of forex loans.

He also noted that the debate over the issue of sentencing criminals to life in prison had been resolved through an amendment to the criminal code.

He said a working group within the ministry had drafted new regulations governing civil suits. The draft will be submitted to the government early next year, he added.

A draft of new regulations on punitive procedure is also set to be submitted to the cabinet during the first months of 2015, he added.

Trocsanyi said that plans for next year include drafting regulations on public administration jurisdiction. He said that in this area there had only been “half-way solutions” found over the past 25 years since the democratic transition. He expressed hope that the whole issue could be settled during the current government cycle.
