Motorists advised against travel in areas where heavy snow expected
Budapest, December 28 (MTI) – Hungary’s disaster management authority (OKF) advised motorists on Sunday to stay off the roads, if possible, in areas where heavy snowfall is expected.
The OKF warned against travel on roads in areas in the west and southwest of Hungary for which second-degree severe weather warnings have been issued.
The authority advised drivers in those areas who must travel to be sure their vehicles have winter tyres and to take with them snow chains, anti-freeze, drinking water, warm blankets, a battery-powered light, visibility vest and a map or GPS device.
Drivers can check severe weather warnings and road conditions on OKF’s website, Facebook page or with the VESZ application, available at http://vesz.katasztrofavedelem.hu, as well as on the website of the National Meteorological Service (http://met.hu) and the portal of the Hungarian traffic information service (http://utinform.hu).
The National Meteorological Service said late Sunday that it extended its second-degree severe weather warnings to Monday for eight counties in the west and southwest of the country because of drifting snow. Winds in some areas could reach up to 70 km/h, it added.
