Attempts to break Visegrad Four unity won’t succeed, says Hungarian FM to Reusters
There are many attempts to divide the Visegrad Group countries “but they are going to remain unsuccessful,” the foreign minister told the Reuters news agency in an interview published on Wednesday.
Péter Szijjártó said
the V4 were firm in their position to reject migrant quotas after an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Tallinn last week.
“Everybody reassured the others that we are going to fight and we are not going to give up our positions regarding illegal migration and regarding the quotas,” he said. The minister dismissed the idea that Hungary or Poland were becoming isolated within the European Union or that Slovakia and the Czech Republic were drifting away from them within the V4.
Szijjártó insisted that
Hungary would not relinquish any of its national sovereignty to the EU.
“I definitely do not share the approach … that (the) less sovereignty on the level of the member states, the stronger the EU will be. I think it is a dead end street,” he said referring to the debate over whether the EU should strive for deeper integration after Britain exits the bloc in 2019.
Szijjártó added, at the same time, that Hungary supported the idea of a joint European army, arguing that it would strengthen member states to the benefit of the entire bloc.
