Film production boon for Hungary
Budapest (MTI) – Spending on film production in Hungary as a percentage of economic output is by far the highest in Europe.
Hungary provided the production base for 250 movies and television films in 2010-2014, the media authority (NMHH) said on Monday, commenting on European Audiovisual Observatory data. Productions averaged 46 billion forints (EUR 151m) each year over the period.
Production values of Die Hard 5, Hercules and The Martian each exceeded 10 billion forints.
The authority noted that the tax rebate rate for film production had been raised from 20 percent to 25 percent this year, and one-fifth of production costs abroad directly related to filming in Hungary was still eligible for the indirect subsidy. The forint’s exchange rate may also have made Hungary an attractive location for filmmakers, it added.
