Hungary to mark 1848/49 revolution, freedom fight over weekend
Budapest, March 10 (MTI) – Events and programmes commemorating Hungary’s 1848/49 revolution and freedom fight will be held this weekend across the country and abroad.
The state celebration will begin at Kossuth Square in front of Parliament with hoisting the national flag with military honours in the morning, a defence ministry official said on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban will give an address in the garden of the National Museum, a key venue for the revolution’s start in 1848, at 10.30am, Istvan Szabo Kun told a press conference.
The Kossuth and Szechenyi Prizes will be presented at a ceremony in Parliament at 3pm, he said.
In a programme, hundreds of people will recite simultaneously the “National Song” by Sandor Petofi, which is said to have inspired the revolution, in at least 400 hundred of towns and villages on Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
On Saturday Parliament will be open to the public free of charge while the Varkert Bazar and Tancsics prison will similarly be open on Sunday.
