Budapest taxi drivers protest against Uber crowd-sourced transport service

Budapest, March 20 (MTI) – Some 50 taxi drivers protested against the crowd-sourced taxi service Uber in Budapest late on Thursday.

The blog “kettos merce” reported that the protest set off from Heroes’ Square and moved to the bottom of the Buda Castle area at Varkert Bazar.

Police checked several drivers’ identification documents.

Unions and taxi companies object to the idea that people providing services via Uber may not comply with the strict rules laid down for ordinary taxi services such as providing a bill, insurance and submitting themselves to rigorous checks by the authorities.

Uber, which operates in several countries, was launched in Budapest in the first half of November.
