The Cosiest Little Christmas Fair in the Heart of Budapest
It is officially Advent season, which means that all of our favourite Christmas Markets in Budapest have officially opened their gates to all of the visitors who already got in the Christmas spirit. The two biggest and most well-known Christmas fairs in the capital are at Vörösmarty square and in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. Still! Did you know that there are many smaller Christmas fairs all around Budapest? Get to know the Winter Festival and Christmas Market at the Városháza Park. Femina.hu called it “the most family friendly advent festival in Budapest.”
Advent in Budapest
The Winter Festival and Christmas Market at Városháza Park is called Advent in Budapest, and it is being organised for the fifth time. There are many programs to choose from which are all completely free. Advent in Budapest opened in 1 December, and it can be visited until 24 December (during the advent period). This festival emphasizes the importance of traditions, community and togetherness. Of course the essential Christmas fair items such as mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and all other kinds of festive foods and drinks can be found at the winter festival.
Advent = lighting candles
The most magical activity will definitely be the lighting of the gigantic candles on the gigantic advent wreath every Sunday. The first candle will be lit on 3 December at 5 p.m. The lighting of the first candle will also be the ceremonial opening of the whole festival.
Bringing the family together
Children will not be bored on Saturdays and Sundays, because many activities will be organised specifically for them. There will be clowns, concerts for kids, puppet theatre performances, arts and crafts and joint singing. School groups and choirs will also make performances during the winter festival.
There will be programs for adults too. Many evening concerts and theatre performances will entertain the grown-ups of the crowd. Among others, Orsi Kozma and András Petruska will give concerts, both of whom are popular Hungarian musicians. The Pesti Magyar Színház prepared three plays for the advent festival.
And more
Besides the theatrical and musical programs, special Christmas trees will be displayed decorated by little kids. These trees were created in the spirit of environmental awareness. There is actually a contest, so visitors can vote for their favourite tree on the fair’s Facebook page.
Toys will also be collected and donated to children in hospitals.
