(MTI) – Nobel prize winner author Imre Kertesz has been awarded with the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France, commander grade, the French Embassy told MTI.
Roland Galharague, the French ambassador, awarded Hungarian-born Kertesz with the prize at his residence on Thursday evening.
France would like to acknowledge Kertesz’s significant contribution to culture and literature and the “universal dimensions of the Hungarian writer’s life oeuvre,” the embassy said.
Kertesz celebrated his 85th birthday last November. His best-known work is Fatelessness (Sorstalansag) from 1975 on the experiences of a 15-year old boy of the Holocaust. Kertesz, himself a Holocaust survivor, lives in Berlin with his wife.
