Government to financially aid ethnic Hungarian families in Carpathian Basin

The government will make 1 billion forints (EUR 3.2m) available under a 2018 scheme to support ethnic Hungarian families in the Carpathian Basin, the state secretary for Hungarian communities abroad said on Tuesday.

The opening event of the scheme dubbed “Year of Ethnic Hungarian Families Abroad” will be held on February 2, Árpád János Potápi told a press conference. Some 200 million forints have been set aside for pro-family activities by small ethnic Hungarian communities. An additional 400 million forints will be offered to support the setting up of family-friendly businesses or the introduction of services that help families.

Additionally, 210 million forints will be used to support health services and screening in the Carpathian Basin and the setting up of a network of district nurses.

The tenders are planned to be invited in February, Potápi said.

Annual schemes for ethnic Hungarian communities abroad have been announced since 2012 and the Hungarian Permanent Conference decided last November that 2018 would be devoted to families, joining the year of families programme announced by Hungary’s human resources ministry, he said.
