Hungary marks 75th anniversary of Don disaster – PHOTOS
Commemoration were held on Friday to mark the 75th anniversary of the Don disaster, one of the gravest defeats of the Hungarian armed forces.
Budapest
Tamás Vargha, the defence ministry’s parliamentary state secretary, said that
the Hungarian soldiers had fought and died in defence of their homeland and families.
In January 1943, the poorly equipped 2nd Hungarian army fought amid bitter conditions against the Soviet Red Army near the Don River. According to some reports, Hungarians lost 93,500 lives, while other sources put that number at 148,000.
Pákozd
A commemoration also was held on Friday in Pákozd, Hungary.

This was a sad day in Hungarian history. It was impossible for a 200 000+ army to defend such a vast area under those conditions. Supplies were next to none and equipment rarely replaced or too far away to resupply. The more one reads about it the more one learns how many things went wrong that day.
