The head of Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) Ildiko Vida could be dismissed from her position by summer – even in the following weeks, Hungarian daily Népszabadság Online (nol.hu) reported on Monday citing unnamed sources.
NAV insiders believe that Vida’s place as a chief is at risk, and they told Nepszabadsag that she would certainly not have been occupying her current position by summer. They added that although it is not in Vida’s interest to resign, the situation may develop in such a way that she would be dismissed.
Nepszabadsag reported that government sources have not yet confirmed the information, however, they did say that the career model and the salary proposal for tax authority workers, both of which are hallmarked by the name of the head of the tax and customs authority, have been being negotiated by the Hungarian government, but Prime Minister Viktor Orban has not yet approved them.
Vida came into the focus of the public attention in October 2014, when the US State Department temporarily suspended the right of six Hungarians – all of whom were close to the government – to enter the United States. The American embassy in Budapest confirmed that it had credible information that Ildiko Vida had been involved in corrupt practices. The affair stoked anti-government sentiment and continued to fuel outrage across the country.
Nepszabadsag notes that later she admitted that she was one of the individuals banned from entering the United States.
