Deputy parlt speaker: Duty to commemorate victims of communism
Budapest, May 5 (MTI) – Only remembrance can bring about redress for the victims of communism, the deputy speaker of parliament said on Tuesday.
“Remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom is an everlasting duty,” Gergely Gulyas said, opening a two-day international conference organised in Parliament to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the second world war.
The conference focuses on divisions created by the Iron Curtain in the aftermath of the war.
“Nobody has apologised for the crimes of communism or the victims claimed, just as nobody has taken responsibility for these crimes,” Gulyas said. “The rulers who kept the regime alive must not be excused,” he added.
The conference is being co-organised by the international NGO Platform of European Memory and Conscience based in Prague and the Hungarian Remembrance Committee.
