HUF 6 billion reconstruction project of the Castle of Eger

A reconstruction project of the Castle of Eger is to be launched next year, Mátyás Berecz the director of the István Dobó Castle Museum told to hirado.hu.

The project aims to bring back the conditions of the 16th century. The reconstruction of the courtyard, the Archbishop’s palace, the medieval main square of the castle, the medieval cathedral, and the improvement of István Dobó Castle Museum for tourist purposes will be included within the framework of the project.

Mátyás Berecz, the director of the István Dobó Castle Museum, told to hirado.hu that in its present condition, the Castle of Eger is a building complex that is made up of such historical monuments and cultural heritages by which visitors cannot really sense the atmosphere of the 16th century. “Our aim is to create a similar atmosphere as it was in the 16th century”, he added.

He also emphasised that the number one priority for the city has always been culture-focused tourism, and various attractions shall be organized accordingly. “With this HUF 6 billion investment we will try to make the Castle of Eger a tourist attraction which can stand on its own feet. We cannot rely only on state and municipal supports, thus it is our responsibility to make it an attraction that generates revenues”, said the director. It can never be emphasized enough that it was Hungary and the Castle of Eger which was shielding Europe from the Turkish troops for more than a century”, he added.

As a result of the reconstruction project, the Archbishop’s palace will serve as a place for making conferences, representative ceremonies, or even weddings. The castle of Eger has been a symbol of Hungarian patriotism and after the project is completed it can receive guests in a proper way and serve the city as deserved, he stressed.

The construction project, which is based on the conception made by experts of the castle museum, must be completed by the end of 2017.
