Cannes, May 23 (MTI) – Hungarian film “Son of Saul” was awarded the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) prize at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. An international jury of nine film critics awarded the prestigious prize to “Son of Saul” out of a field of 19 contenders.
Director Laszlo Nemes Jeles said at the award ceremony that he was “very happy, proud and honoured” that his film received such positive reviews from critics around the world.
He noted that the film was financed entirely by Hungary, and that despite the international cast, “Son of Saul” was a Hungarian movie through and through.
In response to a question by MTI, the director said the most important thing for him was that the film is seen by as many people as possible.
“Son of Saul” takes place at the Auschwitz concentration camp and tells the story of the final day-and-a-half in the life of Saul Auslaunder, a fictional Jewish member of the death camp’s Sonderkommando charged with aiding with the disposal of gas chamber victims.
