Supporters symbolically bury football in Pécs

The supporters of Pécsi MFC symbolically buried the football in Pécs on Friday after the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) had banned the club from competing in the first-division, nemzetisport.hu reported.

After the referee had ended the “clash” between Pécsi MFC and Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC, the supporters excavated a hole in the centre circle of the pitch and symbolically buried the local football club by lowering a coffin to the hole. The only consolation for those who feel close to Pécsi MFC could be that their beloved club won the last game of the season.

After the game, Dezső Matyi, the owner of Pécsi MFC, expressed his opinion regarding the previously rejected first-division licence requests saying: the measures that the Hungarian Football Federation made do not allow us to talk about football in Hungary anymore. It must be very difficult to make such outrageous decisions. Monday will be a perfect day for everybody concerned to lay their cards on the table. I wish that the prime minister will achieve what he wants with football, but choosing the right people would be a key element for that to happen. Furthermore, I do not really know how the leaders of the federation will be able to cope with their own conscience. Look at what János Mátyus (manager of Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC), Robert Jarni (manager of Pécsi MFC) and the two teams have put on the table, how hard they have worked. Real actions must be taken in order to elevate the Hungarian football from its current state. The players stepped on the pitch despite the fact that they have lost their jobs. Both teams are being humiliated. I have done everything possible, and it is now the role of other people and the legal professionals to determine what they have to do in the future, he said.

Earlier, The Hungarian Football Federation rejected the first-division licence of Győri ETO, Kecskeméti TE, Pécsi MFC, Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC, and Lombard Pápa. Teams failing to qualify to the first division will be competing in Hungary’s third-division (NB III).
