Cabinet Chief: Hungary takes a disproportionate burden of migrants
At his regular Thursday press briefing, cabinet chief Janos Lazar talked about the burning migration problems, which have been at the centre of Hungarian public discourse in the past few weeks. According to Lazar, Hungary cannot bear such a huge influx of immigrants, and this is why the government has initiated a national consultation and law changes, hirado.hu reported.
Apart from his private opinion, the European Commission data also indicates that Hungary takes a disproportionate burden of migrants, the government office chief said at a press conference on Thursday.
The European Union sees the Hungarian situation as one of the most critical one, and even compares it to such other European countries as Germany, Italy, France, and Spain, he said.
Lazar explained that the foremost priority of the government is to make the Council of Europe understand that Hungary cannot bear the current influx of immigrants, and this is why the government has initiated a national consultation and law changes, adding that facts should be brought to the attention of an upcoming session of the Council of Europe.
The cabinet chief also noted that Austria and Germany are about to send back some 15 000 immigrants, while Hungary has only a few thousand places to receive refugees.
He stated that Hungary has complied with every asylum consensus in the past twenty-five years, and it is a mutual interest of all EU member states to avoid the misuse of the refugee status. Referring to a planned campaign on refugees by the United Nations, he pointed out that the problem was not with the political refugees but rather with those who illegal cross borders.
