Hungary should take part in joint European policymaking on refugees, says DK
Hungary’s opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) party has said the country should participate in forming and implementing a joint European asylum policy.
Péter Niedermüller, the party’s deputy leader, told a news conference on Wednesday that the issue of asylum was one of the most divisive subjects in the European Union, and migration would be one of the most important and determining themes of the next few years. He added that a global challenge of this scale could not be solved within a nation-state framework.
He said that DK did not believe fences and exclusionary policies would stop the process.
“There is a need for an open, free and accepting European society,”
Niedermüller added.
This, however, does not mean that DK advocates the unrestricted and uncontrolled admittance of migrants. EU policy should distinguish between those who come to Europe because they genuinely need protection from those who should be sent back to their own countries, he said.
Commenting on the presser, Balázs Hidvéghi, ruling Fidesz’s communications chief, said
leftist parties openly oppose the will of the Hungarian people when they “aggressively promote Brussels’ migration policy and parrot the pro-migration arguments of the Soros network.
Hungarian citizens made it clear at the elections that they do not want to live in an “immigration country” and do not support the distribution and settlement of migrants, which are pillars of Brussels’ migration policy, he said.
