Unbelievable – More than 300,000 Hungarians working abroad
Eurostat has revealed its list detailing information about EU citizens of working age who live far from theirĀ own country in another EU Member State. Here is how many Hungarians were working abroad in 2017 in comparison with the other EU Member States.
EU statistics
It turns out that in 2017, 3.8 percentĀ of the EU citizens between the age of 10 and 64 were residing in a Member State other than their home country. This shows a massive 2.5 percent increase compared to the data from 2007. Germany has the lowest rate with 1.0 percent, and Romania leads the list with 19.7 percent.
Hungarian statistics
As for Hungary, statistics show that emigration of the Hungarians increased a lot: in 2007, our rate was 1.5 percent. Later on, it grew to 2.4 percent in 2012, and it finally reached the tragic 5.2 percent by 2017. Sadly, the rate of Hungarian citizens of working age is more than the 3.8 percent EU average.
Comparison
The rate of working aged citizens earning their living abroad has increased in most of the EU Member States. Germany can be proud of its least high score because its rate increased by only 0.1 percent since 2007. However, Romania lies on the other end of the list with a 12.3 percent increase in the last ten years. Interestingly, the process seems to be reversed in the case of Cyprus. Here, 7.1 percent from 2007 decreased to 3.9 percent. Moreover, Austria, Ireland and Finland are also in the same situation than Cyprus.
