There are less and less high school teachers in Hungary

According to nlcafe.hu‘s report, the number of high school teachers is decreasing in Hungary. One of the reasons behind this might be the low salaries, just like in our previous article.

In higher education, however, data shows that there are fewer students per professor than last year. In courses of higher education, the number of students decreased by 1.6% compared to the previous year’s 2.2%. It is interesting, though, that the number of professors increased by 3%. Taking these changes into consideration data shows that 202.3 thousand students are currently enrolled full-time in higher education.

In high schools, on the other hand, the number of both students and teachers is decreasing, by 2.3% to be precise, based on the statistics published by the Central Statistics Bureau.

Last year, there were 10.6 students per teacher, this year this changed to 12.1.

The severe shortage of teachers was reported by us last year already.

Another interesting data is that while the number of both nurseries and primary schools increased, the number of high schools decreased by 7 and the number of universities by one, reports sonline.hu.

Mobility also starts playing an important role at the time of high school. 16.4% of students study in a county that is different from where they grew up. The biggest movement, unsurprisingly, is in Pest county, where more than half of the students study someplace else, usually in the capital.

This mobility only increases at the level of higher education. Another report by nlcafe.hu shows that Budapest is the domineering city when it comes to universities.

More people tend to apply for universities in the capital, resulting in 6 out of 10 university students spending their weekdays in Budapest.

This is interesting considering the numerous advantages that a university from the countryside has to offer. First off, they cost less, which is a huge concern for students without any support from their families. Choosing a university course outside of the capital is a much better option if they want to escape heavy debts.

Life is also much cheaper in the countryside. Real estate prices in the capital have been on the rise over the past years.

By now, the difference is so great that students can find accommodation for half the price if they opt for universities in the countryside.

Moreover, those universities can be more attractive to students coming from smaller towns or villages. After all, it is much easier to get used to a bigger city in the countryside with a few hundred thousand inhabitants than to the capital with around 2 million people.
