Hungary performs highest number of amputations in Europe
According to an alarming new report, more amputations are performed every year in Hungary than in any other European countries, hvg.hu reports. This figure has not changed since 2015, with smoking and the underfunded health sector to blame.
One of the most renowned international medical journals published a study with alarming results for Hungary: we are the leading country in Europe for the number of large amputations performed due to vasoconstriction, and consequent death rates are three times higher than in Finland,
meaning that every fifth patient dies in hospital following the operation.
The most recent findings of the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery show that the number of the drastic operations is 2.5 times that of the European average, and our results are even worse than those of Slovakia.
The correlation between smoking, life expectancy, money invested in health care and the high amputation rates is obvious, and there has been no improvement since 2015 when a similar study has been conducted within Hungary. According to the Hungarian Association of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, the solution lies in a multi-level development of vascular health treatment, which would mean transformed health centers and improved funding.
