WWI exhibition open at Varkert Bazar

Budapest (MTI) – The government supports construction of a central monument to heroes of the First World War, Bence Retvari, state secretary at the human resources ministry, said at the opening of a WWI centenary exhibition at Budapest’s Varkert Bazar on Tuesday.

Retvari called the event the “most important exhibition of the year”, paying tribute to 661,000 Hungarian soldiers that were killed in battles between 1914 and 1918. He noted that the number was twice as high as that of the victims of WWII, and not included 750,000 prisoners of war and an equal number of injured.

The opening was attended by government commissioner Laszlo L Simon, member of the WWI memorial committee, and Maria Schmidt, head of the House of Terror Museum and governor of the exhibition.
