Survey: Fewer Hungarians living in deep poverty
It is clear that the number of people in Hungary living in deep poverty has dropped, a ministry of human resources official told the Tuesday edition of daily Magyar Idők.
Citing Central Statistical Office (KSH) data, Bence Rétvári, the ministry’s parliamentary state secretary, said: “This is something that not even the European Commission can argue with.”
He said the latest data showed that people’s lives have become more predictable and secure since 2010.
The data verified by Eurostat shows that the proportion of people living in extreme poverty has fallen to 1.4 percent in 2017 from 4.9 percent in 2012. This means that 375,000 fewer people are extremely poor, Rétvári said.
The Hungarian data is better than the European Union average of 1.7 percent, he added.
