Among them, there is one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals – reported szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu. According to the official website of the event, the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level.
A student from Miskolc acquired gold
Based on the unofficial ranking of the 76 competing nations,
the Hungarian team acquired the tenth position
on the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) on Sunday – said the head mentor of the Hungarian delegation Gábor Magyarfalvi, assistant professor of ELTE University, Budapest. The tournament was co-organized by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, starting in Bratislava and ending in Prague.
Mátyás Sajgó, a student of Földes Ferenc Secondary School (Miskolc) won a gold
while Bence Botlik from ELTE Apáczai Csere János Secondary School (Budapest) won a silver medal. Besides, both Eszter Arany, a student of Lovassy László Secondary School (Veszprém) and, Áron Czakó from the Krúdy Gyula Secondary School (Nyíregyháza) won a bronze medal.
According to the competition’s website, all participants are ranked based on their individual scores. Gold medals are awarded to the top 12% of students, silver medals to the next 22% while bronze to the next 32% of students. In fact, each country can send a team consisting of four students. The participating students are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a
five-hour laboratory practical and five-hour written theoretical examination.
The Hungarian team was selected and prepared by the Chemistry Institute of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest and it consisted of students who were the best at the national competitions. Interestingly,
the head mentor of the Hungarian delegation was elected to be the chairman of the contest’s International Organizing Committee again.
The absolute winners of the tournament were Qingyu Chen (China), Aleksei Konoplev (Russia) and Raymond Eugene Bahng (South-Korea). Besides, the best practice exam was also done by Qingyu Chen, while Yichen Nie (China) wrote the best theoretical exam.
Problem-solving skills and outstanding knowledge are needed
The program is intended to stimulate student interest in chemistry through independent and
creative solving of chemical problems.
It also aims to promote international contacts in chemistry, friendships between young scientific workers of different nationalities, cooperation among pupils, and exchange of pedagogical and scientific experience in chemistry.
Preparation for the International Chemistry Olympiad demands a
high level of understanding and interest in chemistry
and an outstanding ability to relate chemical subjects with one another as well as with the practical world.
The 2019 Olympiad will take place in Paris between 21 to 30 July where 1987 Nobel-prize laureate Jean-Maria Lehn already invited everybody:
