Pakh sues state over Golgota painting

Budapest, July 31 (MTI) – Imre Pakh, the New York based art collector of Hungarian origin who owns Mihaly Munkacsy’s Golgota — currently on loan to Hungary — has decided to sue the state for preventing the landmark painting’s removal from the country.

Pakh’s lawyer, Gabor Hollo, told the daily Nepszabadsag that they would challenge the legality of the Hungarian state’s procedure to protect the painting. He insisted that the state has no right to prevent Pakh from taking the work out of the country.

Hollo said he had informed the Forster Gyula National Heritage and Asset Management Centre about the decision in a letter but had received no reply.

Asked by the paper whether Pakh plans to take criminal action, he said that the two sides in the dispute should strike a reasonable and fair agreement.

The painting is one of eminent 19th-century painter Munkacsy’s famous “Christ Trilogy”.
