Court rules to lift Czeglédy arrest
A court in Szeged in southern Hungary has overruled an initial decision by the local district court and lifted the detention of Csaba Czeglédy, a left-wing politician and fixer who was in pre-trial detention for the suspected misappropriation of public funds, the head of the court prosecutor said on Saturday.
The court has ruled that the suspect must remain under criminal supervision because there is a danger that he would repeat his crime and he had attempted in the past to hinder the procedure, Eva Bakos said.
The investigation against Czeglédy has been completed, documents have been presented and charges will be raised in the near future. However, currently, it is not necessary to maintain the strictest coersive measures, the court ruled.
He must stay in his home in Szombathely and his movements will be monitored. In line with the ruling, he can only leave his home for special purposes, such as seeing a doctor.
Czeglédy, a lawyer who has worked for the opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) party and the Socialists, has been under investigation for suspected misappropriation of 6 billion forints (EUR 19m) in public funds.
