Air quality dangerous to health in several Hungarian cities

The high concentration of dust particles in the air poses a health danger in Budapest, Dunaújváros, Tököl and Putnok, as shown by a red index issued for these cities by the national public health centre on Saturday.

Additionally, the air quality index was orange, meaning unhealthy, in Veszprém, Várpalota, Százhalombatta, Pécs, Vác, Szolnok, Eger, Miskolc, Sajószentpéter, Nyíregyháza and Salgótarján.

The index was green, showing objectionable air quality, for Dorog, Esztergom, Kazincbarcika, Hernádszurdok, Oszlár and Szeged.

Local governments can issue a smog alert based on a red or orange index.

The Budapest Mayor’s Office said later in the day that based on data collected about air quality on Thursday and Friday, as well as the most recent forecasts, a smog alert introduced on Thursday need not be extended. Air quality on Saturday continued to improve in the afternoon and early evening and the concentration of dust particles remained low. Excellent air quality is forecast for Sunday and it is not expected to deteriorate in the following days, the statement said.
