Survey measures increased support for tighter migration laws

Budapest, September 14 (MTI) – Eighty-two percent of Hungary’s voters have expressed support for strict changes to regulations concerning illegal immigration, pollster Szazadveg told MTI on Monday, citing a recent survey.

Referring to the survey, conducted in early September, the pollster said that two-thirds of the respondents thought that the migration situation in Hungary was very serious; 23 percent saw it as serious, and 10 percent thought that the current risk around illegal migration was negligible.

Since the beginning of the year, the ratio of those that see the current laws as too lenient, has continuously grown: from 70 percent in January to 74 percent in June and 82 percent in September. Simultaneously, the ratio of respondents that see no need for tightening has been reduced from 23 percent in January to 16 percent.

According to the report, 83 percent of the respondents think it is unacceptable that migrants should cross borders, while 72 percent reject the European proposal that EU states should receive Syrian refugees without an upper limit.
