Eighteen Hungarian policemen arrested for not following their duty
The authorities arrested Eighteen Hungarian policemen on duty on the Hungarian motorway M1. Allegedly these policemen accepted money from drivers in return for not charging them on the motorway which is located not far from Győr (Győr-Moson-Sopron County).
Index reported that so far, the investigation in the case revealed that these policemen from the Győr-Moson-Sopron County’s main police station accepted cash from drivers and did not charge them on the motorway if they broke a traffic rule. All of this happened when these policemen were on duty. Currently, investigators hold house-searches and are looking for suspects.
So far eighteen men were arrested and during the house-searches, nearly 3,2 million HUF were found (9,800 EUR).
The public prosecution demands to make a decision which results in the deprivation of liberty. In the action, besides the Hungarian police and the public prosecution of Győr the National Defence Service, the Intervention Police and the Counter Terrorism Centre helped – approximately 150 people.
This kind of crime committed by the policemen usually results in 2-8 years of deprivation of liberty, but the total is 12 years.
