The Associated Aviation Trade Union (LESZ) responsible for representing on-land operators is gearing up for a strike, after weeks of fruitless negotiations with the management team of Malév Ground Handling. The goal Attila Csorba, the president of the trade union, has is a 15-per cent raise.
There might be delays at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport due to workers’ strikes – reports Portfolio. The president of the Associated Aviation Trade Union, Attila Csorba, revealed that this would be the first strike since 2011. Even though air traffic in Hungary has been experiencing significant growth in the past 3-4 years, employees’ salaries have not changed for a long time.
Csorba also pointed out that, back in 2013-2014, those working for Malév GH Ltd. got their salaries reduced by 25%, with the promise of raises and compensation in the future. However, nothing came of this, not even after the board members were replaced.
This strike is really a cry for help, as wages are incredibly low, lots of employees decide to move abroad, so they really have no other tools to request a change.
On top of everything, employees are overworked. Due to the labour shortage, workers’ schedules have become unbearable. For instance, it often happens that those checking tickets start work at 3 am and have to work for 12 hours 45 minutes. Fluctuations are high; the fact that in the past one year, about 200 people had come and gone is very revealing about the low wages and demanding working hours.
The negotiations have been going on for about a month and a half now, but no agreement has been reached. However, workers are adamant about the 15%-raise, as this could be the first step towards stopping the outflow of employees.
