The most influential women in Hungary – Mrs Orbán no longer No. 1?

The Hungarian Forbes prepared a list of the most influential women in Hungary for the fifth time. However, this was the first time Anikó Lévai, Viktor Orbán’s wife, did not make the cut. There was a change in the business category, too, and a new category was added – those to watch out for.

To compile the list, the Hungarian Forbes used data from Bisnode as well as collecting information from dozens of conversations. They took into consideration the activities of women from the past year who live and work in Hungary, after which the ranking was made.

In the fields of politics and public life, many new names emerged. Márta Pardavi, the co-president of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, made it back to the list after several years of not being featured. Judit Varga, the Minister of State for EU relations, is a first-time nominee, along with Klaudia Szemereyné Pataki.

Business category

Ilona Dávid stepped down from her position as president of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV); however, she still holds influential positions at both Volán and DAKK (Southern Great Plain Transport Centre Ltd.). In fact, she is in a unique position as someone who simultaneously oversees the train and road travel in the country and has international influence as well.

Nevertheless, Éva Hegedüs, the proprietor and president of Gránit Bank, managed to surpass Dávid. She is able to work with anyone and is about to float her company on the stock market.

A name regularly featured on the list is Edina Heal, who used to be the CEO of Google but is now operations manager at the Republic Group. Another new name, on the other hand, is Beatrix Mészáros Lőrincné Kelemen, who has many formal titles. In the past year, she mainly worked in managerial positions at Echo TV; however, she will soon start work as the president of Ozone and Life networks.

Culture and media

When it comes to culture, Ágnes Havas, the leader of the Hungarian National Film Fund, is still in first place. Last year, she distributed a total of 6.8 billion forints (21,262,569.30 EUR) worth of subsidies. Ilona Keserü, a Hungarian painter, is new to the list. In the last ten years, she had an impressive income of 36.1 million forints (112,879.23 EUR) from auctions.

In the Media category, RTL network leader Gabriella Vidus secured the first place, while Kinga Mészáros, who became the CEO of Centrál Media Group last year, is also in the top three.

Brigitta Rácz, the leader of Femina Media and Indamedia, is a first-timer on the list, along with Krisztina Máté, who is an influential producer who also succeeds when it comes to securing supporters.

Barbara Hámori, a leading figure when it comes to fictional series in Hungary, is also a first-time nominee.

Who to look out for

It seems to be true that the number of women occupying leading positions is slowly but surely rising. However, real power and influence still seem to be with the same, ever-decreasing circle. So, the “who to look out for” category is for those who, despite their limited power, have journeys worth following.

These women are influential figures in various fields, even if a whole country does not know their names and they do not have a huge budget. However, most of them care deeply about their environment.

This list includes Nóra Ritók L., the founder of the Real Pearl Foundation; Diána Ürge-Vorsatz, physicist and vice president of the workgroup focusing on mitigation at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Szilvia Gyurkó, children’s rights expert; Judit Polgár, an Olympic Champion, and Kriszta Székely director as well as Ági Pataki producer.
