Jobbik supports challenging quota system in court

Budapest, September 25 (MTI) – The radical nationalist Jobbik party said the government would have its backing if it were to challenge the EU’s refugee quota system in the European Court of Justice.

Party leader Gabor Vona told a press conference on Friday that Jobbik rejects “all types” of quota system on the grounds that they are “absurd”.

“We need to consider holding a referendum on the issue in Hungary, to provide the government with more room for manoeuvre and to boost its bargaining power,” Vona said.

Vona once again called on the government to initiate an amendment of the founding treaty of the European Union to allow the referendum.

On Thursday, government office chief Janos Lazar said the government was proposing a parliamentary debate on the quota system to hear the opinions of political parties before deciding on whether to appeal against the EU decisions on quotas in court. Lazar said the quota system is a typical example of “moral imperialism” that “Germany is forcing on Europe”.

On the topic of reinstating the border guard, Vona said continuing to use police and soldiers to protect the border is “abnormal and wrong”. He said if the borders require protection, Hungary must be “flexible enough” to establish a dedicated force capable of getting the job done.

Vona also touched on the Constitutional Court’s recent ruling that a decision by the Kuria, Hungary’s supreme court, approving a referendum initiative on allowing men to retire after 40 years of work was unconstitutional. Vona said that if his party were to come to power in 2018, the issue would be put back on the agenda because allowing men to retire early would be “fair, feasible and a good decision”.
