Budapest – one of the most searched tourist destinations

New data from Google Trends looked at the most searched travel destinations. The data suggests that people are travelling farther and farther, with exotic destinations like South East Asia, India or the Middle East experiencing a surge in interest. Budapest, the capital of Hungary, also fared well on the list.

Comparethemarket.com published fascinating statistics regarding the most popular holiday destinations, using data from Google Trends as a basis. The focus was on the period between 2009 and 2019, and which countries and cities saw the greatest surge in popularity (meaning the increase in internet searches) and which experienced a decline in interest.

The findings are promising when it comes to Hungary – Budapest was the number one city that saw the greatest increase in interest (the number of searches almost doubled!).

This could be attributed to the increase in direct flights to Ferenc Liszt International Airport, the government’s projects to increase tourism but also to the fact that Budapest is one of the cheapest cities in Europe.

It is interesting to note, though, that Kolkata, which saw the biggest increase in popularity, had to be excluded from the list as the reason behind the popularity growth is most likely linked to the fact that it changed its name from Calcutta fairly recently.

In terms of countries, it was the Philippines that people searched for the most in the last ten years (showing a 70.45% increase). Clearly, a lot changed since the 1990s, when the country was not among the most popular holiday destinations due to political issues.

As opposed to this, Egypt is the country which lost the interest of travellers the most in the past decade, showing an 84.8% decline. This can be explained by protests, revolutions and terrorism in the region; however, there is still hope for recovery.
