V4 countries agree on need for global cooperation to resolve migration crisis
Budapest (MTI) – The countries of the Visegrad Group (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) agree that in addition to European cooperation, global cooperation is needed to resolve the migration crisis, the state secretary for migration said late on Tuesday.
Since the start of the crisis, these countries have had similar views about it, Szabolcs Takacs said after meeting the ambassadors of the V4 at Corvinus University in Budapest. They were in agreement that protecting the external borders of the European Union is an absolute priority, and help must be provided to any EU country that unable to do so on its own, he added.
It is increasingly understood in Europe that a quota system to distribute migrants would only treat the symptoms of the problem, he said. Although it is largely a European crisis, its origins are connected to global problems such as the Syrian and Libyan crises, he added.
EU members must urgently reach a consensus on the financial and technical measures needed to resolve security issues. But the help of powerful countries beyond Europe is also needed, he added.
