Foreign minister signs agreements with US companies on job-creating investments in Hungary
New York, October 3 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has signed a number of agreements with American companies on job-creating capacity expansions at their Hungarian units during a visit to Chicago.
Szijjarto told MTI by phone that on Friday he met with the heads of eight American companies in the automotive, chemicals and farm machinery industries that have businesses in Hungary.
“We signed agreements on the expansion of their activities in Hungary on the basis of which we can announce, already in the course of this year, American investments in Hungary that will create as many as 1,000 jobs,” he said.
He said the company heads all voiced their satisfaction with the production and investment environment in Hungary.
The Hungarian government is committed to reducing energy tariffs for the industrial sector, he said, adding that overpriced energy was the biggest disadvantage for companies in Europe compared to the United States.
“Because there is still not any common European strategy for cutting energy costs, Hungary took it upon itself to start reducing energy prices,” Szijjarto said, referring to a series of tariff reductions for households the government mandated earlier.
Also on Friday, Szijjarto discussed economic and cultural cooperation with Rahm Emanuel, the mayor of Chicago.
Emanuel acknowledged the renaissance and diversity of Jewish culture in Hungary.
The sides affirmed their cooperation on the matter of the 35,000-40,000 ethnic Hungarians in the Chicago area, and Emanuel expressed his appreciation for the re-opening of the Hungarian consulate general in the city.
