According to origo.hu, Budapest Airport received Airport of the Year award at the CAPA Centre for Aviation ceremony. Ethiopian Airlines became the best traditional airlines, and IndiGo won the low-cost category.
One day after Budapest Airport reported passenger traffic data breaking all records, the airport could celebrate another success. CAPA Centre for Aviation, which is one of the world’s leading aviation market research and analyst organization, gave the Airport of the Year award to Budapest Airport.
The CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence medal is granted for airlines and airports which not only successful, but they can also adapt to the quickly-changing environment experienced in the industry and they reveal directions and strategies.
The award is not based on passenger satisfactory survey or other sponsorship, but the winners are chosen by an international jury based on research results of two independent international organizations, CAPA and Heidrick & Struggles.

Good relations with the government
By choosing Budapest Airport, the jury assessed that it was able to diversify its activities after the bankruptcy of Malev (the former Hungarian national airlines) in 2012, and it could make the airport grow through pioneering strategic initiatives. It could attract several new airlines to replace Malev; the passenger traffic increased by 8% last year and 13% this year so far – the explanation says. The solid financial basis provides opportunity for further development: in the medium term, cargo base, pier and check-in hall can be built. The explanatory statement highlights Budapest Airport’s relationship with the government which is at “historical peak”.
“Airport of the Year award is an especially important feedback for us, since the turnover of Budapest Airport is breaking records and it means a lot that, in addition to the positive feedbacks of our passengers, CAPA, one of the world’s leading market research and analyst company, recognizes our work at a professional level as well” – Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport said in Helsinki.

It is all very nice. However, just passed though this great airport and I had to remove my shoes and put them through the X-ray machine! Yes, in October 2015! In the last 4 months I have been in the following airports: Amsterdam, Valetta, Pescara, Santiago de Compostela, La Coruna, Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stansted, JFK, Newark and Budapest. At each occasion I had been wearing a simple brown shoes. Not a boots or some heavy platform shoes, just some normal male shoes. Needless to say, it was only at the “airport of the year” that I had to remove my shoes. Now I wonder if Budapest is still stuck in a post 9/11 time warp or the former communist traditions are still very much alive and they want to be the best student of some greater power? Or they lack a modern X-ray machine that all the other airports seem to have and that is why they have to check a normal shoes that is simply not done in other places? I’m really curious what they have to say after receiving such a glorious award.
Our shoes were checked in Frankfurt and in San Francisco, too. Better to be safe than sorry.
In the last 2 years my shoes were checked and I had to remove them in Malaga, and Vienna. They don’t follow the former conmunist tradition…
I am more than satisfied with the facilities, with customer care of your beautiful airport! The 3 guys comlained above belong to a screaming minority, which looks for anoying micro details.
