European political union still incomplete, says European Journalists Association
Budapest, October 9 (MTI) – The political union that European Union’s founding fathers dreamed of creating is still incomplete, Maria Romana de Gasperi, daughter of the late Alcide de Gasperi, said in her keynote address to the 53rd general assembly of European Journalists Association (EJA) in Budapest.
De Gasperi urged the media to help European politics regain its lost wisdom. The European project is the continent’s future, she added.
EJA President Paolo Magagnotti said that despite its strong economy, the EU has yet to be a key player in world politics, adding, however, that member states these days are reluctant to hand over responsibilities to the EU. Magagnotti argued that Brussels only makes decisions that are supported by member states.
Budapest Deputy Mayor Alexandra Szalay-Bobrovniczky said the role of the media is to keep the public informed, while the role of politicians is to recognise problems and find the best ways to solve them. She said the capital has worked closely with the government on managing the migrant crisis, adding that their common goal is “a strong Hungary in a strong Europe”.
Jurgen Brautmeier, director of the media authority in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, called for a “new enlightenment” that recognises the role of an independent press.
