Budapest Airport closed down due to runway damage! – UPDATE

A number of flights were redirected or grounded at Liszt Ferenc International Airport on Wednesday evening because of damage to a runway, HungaroControl, Hungary’s air traffic controller, told MTI.

The airport’s number 1 runway was damaged and a loose chunk of concrete punctured the tyre of Wizz Air’s Airbus A321 arriving from Stockholm at 6.20pm, Anita Kiss, HungaroControl’s foreign relations and communications chief, said.

Twenty-eight flights have been grounded and ten have been redirected to nearby airports.

Mihály Hardy, the head of communications at Budapest Airport, said that as the number 2 runway, which has been closed for a revamp since April, will only be reopened on Thursday, the airport had to be closed down until runway 1 is repaired.

The airport reopened at 8pm.

UPDATE

As the press release said, operation of Budapest Airport has continued. The airport had to be closed due to an extraordinary maintenance on Runway I.

In the meantime Runway II is closed too due to an ongoing planned maintenance thus due to flight safety operation had to be suspended on Runway I until the surface is repaired.

Altogether 7 flights diverted to other airports while a dozen flights were holding. Right now 3 departing flights are cancelled.
