Over 24 thousand Hungarians applied for a residence permit in the UK
Based on recent data published by the British Ministry of Internal Affairs, over 24 thousand Hungarian citizens have applied for a residence permit in the United Kingdom. The list is led by Polish and Romanian citizens.
Heti Világgazdaság reports that up to the beginning of June 2019, 750 thousand EU citizens (from 27 EU countries) living in the UK have applied for a residence permit, among them there were 24 thousand Hungarians.
According to the British government, those foreign EU citizens who are living legally and habitually in the UK can continue to remain there even after Brexit takes place, with all their current rights remaining, but they have to apply for a residence permit at the British Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Polish (132 400) and Romanian (110 900) citizens are on top of the list, but the number of Italian citizens applying for a permit is high as well, standing at 91 400. Altogether 52 900 Spanish, 32 300 French and 26 600 German citizens have applied for a permit.
The fewest number of permits submitted by EU citizens from Central and Eastern Europe is from Slovenia, with 800 applicants.
So far, 668 applications were processed by the ministry, and almost all of them were granted.
EU citizens have to confirm their identity, that they are living habitually in the UK, and whether they were ever convicted of a crime.
One can apply for a residence permit on the phone, via email, or online. You can reach the EU Settlement Resolution Centre from anywhere in the UK from 8:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 16:30 on weekends at the following number: 0030 123 7379.
However, you can also submit your application along with your passport or other documents that can be used to identify you via post.
EU citizens have until December 31, 2020, to apply for a residence permit in the UK, whether or not the terms of Brexit are accepted by the House of Commons.
The application for a residence permit in the UK is now free. Those EU citizens who have applied for one in the trial period will be refunded.
