Kövér attends Eurasian house speakers’ summit in Kazakhstan
Hungarians are proud of being “the westernmost eastern nation”, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said at the fourth Eurasian summit meeting of house speakers in Nur-Sultan on Tuesday.
Hungary’s foreign policy lays emphasis on developing ties with eastern, Asian nations on the basis of common historical and cultural traditions; this is why in 2011 the government announced its foreign policy strategy of eastern opening, which brought upon major progress in trade, economic, educational and cultural relations, parliament’s press chief Zoltán Szilágyi quoted the house speaker as saying.
Kövér said that
both Europe and Asia may become a major power centre in the emerging multipolar world order.
It remains to be seen, however, whether Europe will be a buffer zone or a link between the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian regions from the political, economic and military points of view, he said.
Hungary aims to develop close cooperation with all the major world economic players, and supports efforts to develop a single Eurasian economic and free trade zone,
Kövér said.
Meeting Nurlan Nigmatulin, chairman of the Mazhilis (lower house) of the Kazakh Parliament, Kövér called Kazakhstan Hungary’s strategic partner in Central Asia, one that acts as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
Kövér also met Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma.
The two house speakers praised the dynamic development of relations between the two countries and two parliaments, and agreed to set up an inter-parliamentary committee to promote economic, trade, educational, cultural and tourism ties.
Kövér laid a wreath on the memorial of Hungarian political prisoners deported to Kazakhstan during Stalin’s communist dictatorial rule.
