Jobbik: State awards should be revocable

MPs of the opposition Jobbik party proposed that state awards should be made revocable, in an open letter to President János Áder on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in front of the presidential palace, MP János Bencsik said that an amendment was necessary to allow for the withdrawal of high decorations once the recipient proves unworthy, and referred to the former head of a children’s home who has recently been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for sexual offences against minors.

“The real value of orders is indicated by the company in which one shares the honour,” Jobbik MP Bencsik said and added that revocability would add to the value of an award.

MP György Szilágyi, the other proponent, referring to the case at the children’s home said the fact that the convicted director could retain an earlier awarded state decoration was met with a “tremendous uproar”.
