Gyurcsány wants to strip Hungarians of EU funding, says ruling Fidesz
Ferenc Gyurcsány, the leader of the opposition Democratic Coalition (DK), wants changes to the way European Union monies are distributed such that localities willing to settle migrants would get access to the funds while the rest of Hungary would be frozen out, Balazs Hidveghi, a ruling Fidesz MEP, told Hungarian journalists in Brussels on Wednesday.
The Fidesz politician said that the essence of DK‘s proposal was that localities refusing to accept migrants would lose EU funding.
He insisted that the “pro-immigration opposition” would dismantle Hungary’s fence at the southern border and allow illegal migrants to enter the country, adding that it also supported a quota-based system for distributing migrants.
“If it was up to them, it is not in Hungary that they’d decide how many migrants settle in Budapest or other Hungarian cities but in Brussels,” he said.
