Hungarian nationalist movement rejects Romanian charge it planned to set off bomb

Budapest (MTI) – Hungary’s Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement (HVIM) has rejected the charge that it planned to set off a bomb in Kezdivasarhely (Targu Secuiesc), central Romania.

HVIM responded to a statement by prosecutors of the Romanian counter terrorism and organised crime unit (DIICOT) saying that the authorities had detained a local HVIM leader suspected of intending to detonate a home-made explosive device in the town during Tuesday’s national holiday.

HVIM, which describes itself as “nationalist radicals”, said its organisation in Szekler Land had been exposed “to baffling harassment and secret-service slanders” over the past day.

It said the press release issued by the Romanian intelligence service SRI was “full of lies” as the authorities “did not find any explosive device which could be used in a way imagined by SRI.”

During house searches the authorities found nothing other than “flags, T-shirts, New Year’s Eve petards, an optical accessory for an Airsoft, and a birthday cake sparkler,” it said.

HVIM, whose name refers to the number of counties in Hungary’s pre-Trianon treaty borders, said that due to the “absurd slanders” it would turn to international courts, the international press and rights organisations.

Hungary’s co-ruling Christian Democrats said that if the charge proved to be well-founded, they would condemn the HVIM because Romania’s ethnic Hungarian minorities have always fought for their rights peacefully, the party added.
