Szijjarto discusses gas project with Turkish counterpart

Belgrade, December 3 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto met Mevlut Cavusoglu, his Turkish counterpart, for talks on energy cooperation, in Belgrade on Thursday.

Parties at the talks, held on the sidelines of an OSCE conference, concluded that the future of the planned Turkish Stream gas pipeline was uncertain in light of the recent Russia-Turkey conflict.

At the talks, Szijjarto told Cavusoglu that both Russia and Turkey are crucial partners for Hungary, and their conflict is “definitely harmful” both for Hungary and Europe as a whole. He voiced hope that the situation could soon be resolved.

Szijjarto also said that a NATO-Russia agreement would be instrumental in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organisation, but added that it necessitated resolving issues in Russia-Turkey ties.

Szijjarto said Hungary fully supported speeding up talks aimed at ensuring visa-free entry for Turkish nationals to the European Union.
