Government approves Hungary climate policy priorities

Hungary’s government on Wednesday approved its medium and long-term climate policy priorities, the innovation and technology ministry has said.

At a cabinet meeting, the government adopted a new strategic document that replaces the current National Energy Strategy and will define Hungary’s climate policy goals through 2030 with an outlook to 2040, it said in a statement.

The ministry added that by the end of the year it will draw up a national strategy for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The fundamental principles of that strategy were also approved at Wednesday’s meeting, it said.

Cabinet members discussed and approved the climate change action plan, a report on the effects of climate change on the Carpathian Basin, the new national energy strategy as well as the national energy and climate plan.

The long-term, comprehensive clean development strategy mapped out on the basis of the documents will be submitted to the government by the end of the year, the ministry said.

The government will ask parliament’s opposition-led sustainable development committee to debate the documents, it added.
