Hungarian man died in the detention cell of the Bangkok Airport

Police are still investigating the reasons.

Local police officers found a Hungarian man dead this morning in the detention cell of the Suvarnabhumi Airport of Bangkok shortly after he was incarcerated for overstaying his visa. Authorities did not say the name of the 60-year-old man but shared with local media that they already got in touch with his relatives in Hungary. They added that the man waited for further legal action and repatriation in the detention cell where he was put around noon on Saturday, Blikk reported.

Interestingly, local police said that after being put in the detention cell, he did not show any unusual signs. Furthermore, when he was last checked late on Saturday night, he was sleeping normally in the cell as others did in the detention building. However,

when the police checked him again on Sunday morning, the man has been dead for more than eight hours.

Afterwards, forensic police and doctors from Bang Phli Hospital were called to examine the body, but no wounds or traces of physical attack were found on it.

The Bangkok Post wrote that Pol Col Nathapol Komintarachart, the chief of the Suvarnabhumi police, said that the Hungarian embassy had been contacted to inform his relatives. The body is going to be sent to the Rama Bang Phli Hospital or the Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute in Samut Prakan for an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

According to hvg, Tamás Menczer, Minister of State for Communication and Hungary’s International Image at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Facebook that there is no correlation between the death of the Hungarian man and the coronavirus. He added that the presumed cause of death is diabetes. “Our colleagues are in touch with local police, and we are doing everything to find out what happened,” he concluded.
